Pinewood Infant School Governors

Introduction from the Chair of Governors

Our school has a very committed Governing body who work actively to help improve and support the school. We are actively involved in the life of the school, making regular visits to see the workings of the school. I would like to take the opportunity to explain the role of the school governors and who we are.

The Governing body is accountable for the schools overall performance. This of course is run on a day to day basis by Mrs Cook. We work closely with Mrs Cook to set the overall aim and direction of Pinewood and monitor progress.

Some of our responsibilities include:

  • To ensure the school fulfils its statutory duties – checking that policies are in place and all legal requirements are fulfilled.
  • Challenge and support the leadership team – reading reports, attending meetings, and asking questions to ensure the school is continually moving forward.
  • To help shape the vision and direction of the school – we meet regularly with staff and parents to share our thoughts and ideas for the future.
  • Ensuring the curriculum is broad, balanced and setting standards for pupil achievement.
  • Appointing the Head and Deputy Head Teachers
  • Overseeing the Schools Finance.

Governor Meetings

The Governors meet 6 times a year as a Full Governing Body (FGB). At these meetings we receive a detailed report from Mrs Cook, review how we are doing against our aims, school improvement plan and agree the school budget.

Additionally we have 4 regular sub-committees and each Governor is a member of at least one committee. Some Governors also have specific roles and responsibilities such as Special Educational Needs (SEN) Governor, Child Protection (CP) Governor or Safeguarding Governor.

Our sub-committees are:

  • Resources & Premises meet once a term
  • Children & Learning meet once a term
  • Pay Committee meet once a term (usually at the end of an R&P meeting)
  • Head Teachers Pay & Perofmrance meet once a term (usually before the start of a FGB meeting).

Individual Governors are also appointed as curriculum subject or topic leaders – English. Maths, Early Years, etc., and meet with teachers responsible for those curriculum areas to discuss how things are developing.

Becoming a governor

A governors role can be highly rewarding, but equally, time consuming. At Pinewood, we are privileged to have such a committed and hard-working Head teacher, Senior Leadership Team and Staff. We advertise vacancies as they arise but please feel free to contact me if you are interested in becoming a governor or finding more about Governance.
