Pinewood Infant School has provision children with Autism. This consists of 8 places funded from Hampshire Educational Authority and serves Northeast Hampshire. Children with these spaces are allocated through County systems.
The Autism class (Tadpoles) has children in all three year groups; Year R, Year 1 and Year 2. All children have individual works stations for their own learning programmes and the children come together for group sessions such as snack and story time, to develop wider social skills.
Tadpoles consists of four main areas: a main classroom, small classroom, sensory room and a purpose built outdoor area. This enable the children to have free flow and frequent movement breaks. The sensory room has a sounds and lights focus to complement the physical sensory needs.
Children in Year R learn the Early Years Curriculum and have some separate learning times as a group to focus on this learning. Children in Years 1 and 2, learn the Key Stage 1 National Curriculum together, at their individual levels. The focus is always on the children’s next steps.
Children in the Resourced Provisions are expected and need to be able to manage in the mainstream school for some time. The children have personalised curriculums and programmes between their year group mainstream class and the Resourced Provision small class. They are given support at this time which provides good role models and develops their social and communication skills. This enables them to work with their mainstream class to a greater or lesser extent depending on their individual needs. This programme is flexible and changes as the children develop and grow skills.
